About Us
Established in 1984, The Sewing Room is not your typical alteration shop. We believe even inexpensive pieces can look like a million bucks if they fit to a T. We have experienced staff with fashion backgrounds. We not only help alter your clothing to give you the perfect fit we help you style your wardrobe to keep you updated!

Wedding Gown Alterations
We do require appointments for bridal gown alterations. We offer free bridal gown consultations. Give us a call 586 731-0178 and we can get you scheduled.
Commonly asked questions from Brides:
- Do I need an appointment? Yes. Please contact us via phone to schedule your appointment. We have our schedule out for the year. Peak appointment times do book fast. Give us a call to schedule even if your dress has not yet arrived.
- What is your starting price? We don’t have a starting price. We base all our prices on the work at hand. At your fitting or consultation we will give you a quote.
- How long will the alterations take? During peak season alterations typically take about 2/3months depending on the amount you need done.
- I still plan on losing weight before my wedding should I start my alterations now? When you start the alteration process you should plan on your body measurements staying the same. If you think they will change we will discuss an alteration schedule that will work.
Fittings
Commonly asked questions from our customers:
- Do I need an appointment? It depends on what you need altered. We require appointments for formal dresses and bridal gown alterations (see next section for more details on bridal) and multiple item fittings. Everything else is on a walk-in basis. So if you need your pants measured or jacket etc just come on in during store hours.
- Do you have fitting rooms to try on my item? Yes! We recommend you try your items on for us to be fitted in store. Be sure to bring your shoes if the item is being shortened.
- How long will my alterations take? Typical turn around is one week for most items. Formal gown turnaround time varies by season. If you have specific question on formal wear attire and how long the turnaround time is for alterations give us call, we are happy to answer any questions you may have.
- I need my item quicker than a week. Can you still help me? Yes! Need your item sooner, no problem we can still help you out!
- How do I know when to pick up my item? All items dropped off will be given an exact pick up date on your ticket. We will discuss what date works best for you upon drop off.
- Do you call me when my item is ready? No. Since we discuss a pick up date at drop off you can be assured that your item will be ready on that designated date.
- What form of payments do you take? We accept visa, master card, discover, american express, checks and cash. We do appreciate pre payments of items.
Helpful tips for fittings
- Bring your shoes if item is being shortened
- Bring any undergarments that may affect the fit
- If we are altering the top of your garment and you have long hair bring hair clip or hair tie to pull your hair up
- If item may shrink after washing give it a wash first
- We offer bra cups
- If you are not sure if item is worth altering still bring it in. We are happy to give you price and offer suggestions
